Whether it's fitness, creatives, or personal development, many people don't get started because they feel it's a huge time commitment.

Try a technique that I call "walk the dog."

I walk my dogs because it is beneficial and doesn't take long. What if I did the same thing in other areas of my life?

In this episode, I'll give you a few examples. At the end, send me a text message or tag me on your socials with other ways that you can "walk the dog."

00:00:00.050 --> 00:00:00.289
All right.

00:00:00.289 --> 00:00:00.859
3, 2, 1.

00:00:00.859 --> 00:00:01.310
Let's get it.

00:00:01.310 --> 00:00:02.870
Welcome back to what's your problem?

00:00:02.870 --> 00:00:03.709
The podcast.

00:00:03.709 --> 00:00:04.910
I'm your host Marsh Buice.

00:00:05.389 --> 00:00:08.509
And today I want to help you become more productive.

00:00:09.109 --> 00:00:10.640
In a shorter amount of time.

00:00:10.640 --> 00:00:12.830
Some people don't like the word hacks.

00:00:14.119 --> 00:00:23.839
So I won't use the word hack, but I think we would all agree that it just seems to not be enough time in the day to get more done.

00:00:23.839 --> 00:00:26.030
This is November when I'm recording this.

00:00:26.750 --> 00:00:31.640
And so we're going to end another year and you're as you're skidding into the end of the year.

00:00:32.750 --> 00:00:33.829
How do you feel about it?

00:00:33.979 --> 00:00:36.018
Do you feel like that you're more productive?

00:00:36.049 --> 00:00:38.988
Do you feel like you've kind of slipped a little bit?

00:00:39.259 --> 00:00:43.909
Is it just another year and you just feel like you're a hamster on a wheel.

00:00:44.359 --> 00:00:45.798
Well, I'm going to help you with that.

00:00:46.039 --> 00:00:48.798
And it's not a huge time commitment.

00:00:48.798 --> 00:00:55.279
That's the biggest thing you have to remember as we get started here consistency over intensity.

00:00:55.579 --> 00:00:59.689
And a lot of times when we start something, we start with intensity first.

00:01:00.018 --> 00:01:02.509
Yet we cannot maintain the consistency.

00:01:02.509 --> 00:01:08.959
So if you put consistency over intensity, It may start a little slow for you.

00:01:09.349 --> 00:01:14.579
It may not seem like it's adding up much, but see, everything in life compounds good or bad.

00:01:14.939 --> 00:01:20.308
So as you feed into it, Then that thing feeds upon itself.

00:01:20.819 --> 00:01:25.379
And in the moment doesn't seem like much, but over time, it's monumental.

00:01:25.799 --> 00:01:28.918
So, let me give you a technique that I call walk the dog.

00:01:29.159 --> 00:01:32.849
I love the symbolic nature of just the term walk the dog.

00:01:33.328 --> 00:01:38.099
Because in the mornings, when I wake up the very first thing after I take a leak.

00:01:38.609 --> 00:01:39.808
The dogs know I'm up.

00:01:40.468 --> 00:01:44.909
And they're ready to go walk they are just conditioned to go walking.

00:01:45.028 --> 00:01:47.399
So that's the first thing we do in the mornings.

00:01:47.670 --> 00:01:48.840
I put the harness on him.

00:01:49.290 --> 00:01:53.069
And then I go walk the dogs and it's normally about 15 minutes.

00:01:54.150 --> 00:01:55.409
And the same in the evening.

00:01:55.439 --> 00:01:58.560
When I get home in the evening, they're standing by the door.

00:01:58.590 --> 00:01:59.430
They're ready.

00:01:59.969 --> 00:02:01.379
And so we do the same thing.

00:02:01.680 --> 00:02:03.090
Walking the dog.

00:02:03.659 --> 00:02:05.099
Is a non-negotiable for me.

00:02:05.909 --> 00:02:07.409
It's a non-negotiable for them.

00:02:07.500 --> 00:02:09.210
They just have been conditioned.

00:02:09.900 --> 00:02:11.159
With that expectation.

00:02:11.550 --> 00:02:12.990
So it got me to thinking.

00:02:14.460 --> 00:02:17.039
That I never skip walking the dogs.

00:02:17.039 --> 00:02:19.110
I mean, it could be pouring down rain.

00:02:19.110 --> 00:02:20.969
We'll figure out a way to get out there.

00:02:21.300 --> 00:02:25.650
It may mean that we have to wait another 10 minutes or so, just to see when it's going to.

00:02:26.189 --> 00:02:26.879
Push through.

00:02:27.150 --> 00:02:29.490
There are times we've gone out there in the rain.

00:02:29.669 --> 00:02:30.539
We get it in.

00:02:31.139 --> 00:02:33.090
And so my question to you.

00:02:34.139 --> 00:02:36.689
Is what if you took this same approach?

00:02:37.349 --> 00:02:39.030
Toward your creative.

00:02:39.569 --> 00:02:40.590
Professional.

00:02:40.979 --> 00:02:44.400
Or personal endeavors, there are things that you want to do.

00:02:44.849 --> 00:02:50.909
Yet a lot of times you don't start those things because what, it seems like a huge time commitment.

00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:52.379
I just don't have time.

00:02:52.620 --> 00:02:53.550
It says everyone.

00:02:54.150 --> 00:02:58.379
And we have this image in our mind that one day.

00:02:59.069 --> 00:03:03.419
The skies are gonna open up for us and we're just going to be allotted more time.

00:03:03.599 --> 00:03:05.219
We all get 24 hours.

00:03:05.789 --> 00:03:06.780
Just today.

00:03:06.960 --> 00:03:08.310
We may not get tomorrow.

00:03:08.580 --> 00:03:09.900
So, this is all we get.

00:03:10.199 --> 00:03:14.550
So how can I become more productive in a shorter amount of time?

00:03:14.969 --> 00:03:16.590
Using one already have.

00:03:17.009 --> 00:03:18.750
Well, walk the dog.

00:03:19.229 --> 00:03:26.699
And so those days when you have the don't wont's Walk the dog those days when you wish you had more time walk the dog.

00:03:26.879 --> 00:03:28.080
So here's how it works.

00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:29.819
It's the same thing as walking the dog.

00:03:29.849 --> 00:03:30.419
Number one.

00:03:30.879 --> 00:03:33.490
It's a non-negotiable number two.

00:03:33.639 --> 00:03:35.169
It's not a big time commitment.

00:03:35.650 --> 00:03:36.879
And, you know, it's beneficial.

00:03:37.539 --> 00:03:39.669
The same is true for your creative.

00:03:40.120 --> 00:03:42.250
Personal and professional life.

00:03:42.430 --> 00:03:45.819
So let me give you a couple of examples of walking the dog.

00:03:45.849 --> 00:03:46.840
Number one, reading.

00:03:47.020 --> 00:03:51.610
I'm a huge reader, but I did not read my first book until I was 25.

00:03:51.610 --> 00:03:54.939
After that, I was like bit by the bug.

00:03:55.360 --> 00:03:56.079
But I get it.

00:03:57.129 --> 00:04:00.939
You got a lot going on and you really don't feel like powering through a book.

00:04:01.180 --> 00:04:04.659
There's nothing in the constitution that says you have to read a book cover to cover.

00:04:04.870 --> 00:04:07.449
So take this same approach of walking the dog.

00:04:07.750 --> 00:04:10.120
Meaning that you can read a book a day.

00:04:11.199 --> 00:04:13.930
It doesn't mean that you have to read the whole book every single day.

00:04:14.289 --> 00:04:16.389
You just find a random book.

00:04:16.420 --> 00:04:17.649
What I call random reading.

00:04:17.649 --> 00:04:18.310
Every morning.

00:04:18.790 --> 00:04:21.939
I pick out a different book, a random book.

00:04:22.360 --> 00:04:23.709
The title jumps at me.

00:04:23.769 --> 00:04:25.180
I pull it off my shelf.

00:04:25.480 --> 00:04:27.009
I go to the table of contents.

00:04:27.279 --> 00:04:30.430
I read the chapter that most resonates with me.

00:04:30.430 --> 00:04:35.199
I just go to the table of contents, whatever chapter sounds interesting for the season.

00:04:35.199 --> 00:04:36.910
I'm in, that's the chapter I read.

00:04:36.939 --> 00:04:39.730
I set my timer for 15 minutes walking the dog.

00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:44.319
I set my timer for 15 minutes and I read that sometimes I get through the whole chapter.

00:04:44.560 --> 00:04:56.050
Sometimes I get only halfway through, but what I'm trying to do is, is I'm trying to trigger some ideas, something new, something enlightening that I can use that day.

00:04:56.959 --> 00:04:58.459
Now you can do the same thing.

00:04:58.459 --> 00:05:02.480
If you're not into reading books, you can do the same thing with an audio book.

00:05:03.350 --> 00:05:04.339
Same technique.

00:05:04.550 --> 00:05:05.839
Go to your audio book.

00:05:06.199 --> 00:05:08.329
Pick a chapter that most resonates with you.

00:05:08.689 --> 00:05:12.980
Listen to that one chapter while you're walking the dogs, then.

00:05:13.579 --> 00:05:14.718
When you get back.

00:05:15.468 --> 00:05:16.459
Walk the dog.

00:05:17.069 --> 00:05:18.319
write One page.

00:05:18.978 --> 00:05:20.658
Of what you took away from that.

00:05:20.658 --> 00:05:22.009
How do you interpret that?

00:05:22.908 --> 00:05:25.158
That's going to make you more receptive to your day.

00:05:25.369 --> 00:05:27.499
I say you should write one page every day.

00:05:27.798 --> 00:05:30.738
This empties your mind to clarify your thoughts.

00:05:30.738 --> 00:05:33.408
I'm telling you it is a total game changer.

00:05:33.619 --> 00:05:36.288
You do not have to be an author to write.

00:05:36.769 --> 00:05:37.908
This is for you.

00:05:38.088 --> 00:05:40.788
This is the only time that you're alone with yourself.

00:05:41.059 --> 00:05:43.428
And so you segment just a few minutes.

00:05:43.759 --> 00:05:44.928
To walk the dog.

00:05:45.858 --> 00:05:47.059
And write that one page.

00:05:48.259 --> 00:05:49.519
Do this every single day.

00:05:49.879 --> 00:05:51.379
Remember everything compounds.

00:05:51.858 --> 00:05:52.249
All right.

00:05:52.369 --> 00:05:53.119
Walk the dog.

00:05:53.158 --> 00:05:53.848
Fitness.

00:05:53.908 --> 00:05:59.309
We all wish that we were a little more fit, but Marsh I don't have two hours to work out at the gym.

00:05:59.338 --> 00:06:00.598
I walked the dog.

00:06:01.228 --> 00:06:02.699
10 minutes on the jump rope.

00:06:02.728 --> 00:06:04.048
Start off with three.

00:06:04.408 --> 00:06:06.658
Then go to five, then go to 10.

00:06:06.869 --> 00:06:07.798
You'd be amazed.

00:06:08.098 --> 00:06:08.579
JumpRope.

00:06:08.579 --> 00:06:09.418
You can take everywhere.

00:06:09.418 --> 00:06:10.709
I keep one in my book, sack.

00:06:11.038 --> 00:06:12.238
I keep one in my truck.

00:06:12.478 --> 00:06:13.738
I keep one in the garage.

00:06:13.769 --> 00:06:16.108
I take them everywhere because I can.

00:06:16.499 --> 00:06:18.629
Get cardio in anywhere I'm at.

00:06:19.048 --> 00:06:22.048
So walk the dog 10 minutes jumping the rope.

00:06:23.129 --> 00:06:29.819
In the mornings do that then in the evening, I'm just giving you something to kind of go by then in the evening, walk the dog, again.

00:06:30.189 --> 00:06:32.288
Set your timer for 10 or 15 minutes.

00:06:32.588 --> 00:06:35.199
Walk the dog, meaning pushups.

00:06:35.619 --> 00:06:37.389
Planks and pull-ups.

00:06:37.809 --> 00:06:38.798
Just that right there.

00:06:39.579 --> 00:06:41.738
Remember consistency over intensity.

00:06:41.949 --> 00:06:44.559
The intensity is going to naturally come about anyway.

00:06:45.158 --> 00:06:46.629
Just be consistent.

00:06:46.629 --> 00:06:48.189
The more consistent you are.

00:06:48.968 --> 00:06:49.809
The better results.

00:06:49.809 --> 00:06:50.949
You're going to see over time.

00:06:51.218 --> 00:06:53.668
And remember, the timeline we're own eventually.

00:06:53.668 --> 00:06:55.918
And ultimately, you do this consistently.

00:06:56.189 --> 00:06:58.139
Eventually things are going to tip.

00:06:58.468 --> 00:07:01.918
And ultimately you're going to succeed at whatever it is that you're doing.

00:07:02.699 --> 00:07:05.129
If you're in sales, same sort of thing.

00:07:05.189 --> 00:07:06.119
Walk the dog.

00:07:06.509 --> 00:07:11.069
When you get to work in the morning, 15 minutes, bang out those sales calls.

00:07:11.129 --> 00:07:12.928
This is going to set that day up.

00:07:13.408 --> 00:07:18.749
And then in the evening, The last 15 minutes of the day, prepare for the next day.

00:07:19.588 --> 00:07:23.069
So that way you're not rolling Tuesday into Wednesday.

00:07:24.119 --> 00:07:25.228
You just get it done.

00:07:26.178 --> 00:07:29.689
Everybody else is sitting there scrolling social media, waiting to get off.

00:07:30.199 --> 00:07:32.838
While you're walking the dog just 15 minutes.

00:07:32.838 --> 00:07:34.009
Everything counts.

00:07:34.009 --> 00:07:36.228
It all adds up good or bad.

00:07:36.629 --> 00:07:38.999
, you want it to add, you don't want it to subtract.

00:07:39.449 --> 00:07:41.278
So that last 15 minutes.

00:07:41.788 --> 00:07:44.009
Bang out another set of phone calls.

00:07:44.788 --> 00:07:46.978
Send the emails out just 15 minutes.

00:07:47.038 --> 00:07:49.468
And when that timer goes off, boom, go home.

00:07:49.678 --> 00:07:50.428
You've earned it.

00:07:50.939 --> 00:07:56.759
There's so many different ways that you can apply the technique of walking the dog.

00:07:57.119 --> 00:07:58.619
This will keep you consistent.

00:07:58.869 --> 00:08:02.288
This'll keep you motivated because it's not a huge time commitment.

00:08:02.559 --> 00:08:04.389
There's all kinds of different areas.

00:08:04.548 --> 00:08:06.108
So I've given you a few examples.

00:08:06.139 --> 00:08:11.629
What are a few more ways in your life that you applied walking the dog?

00:08:11.689 --> 00:08:14.329
Love to hear about it, share it with me on social media.

00:08:14.408 --> 00:08:14.769
Be sure.

00:08:14.769 --> 00:08:16.598
And tag me so I can show you some love.

00:08:16.658 --> 00:08:17.678
All right, let's get outta here.

00:08:17.709 --> 00:08:18.519
Keep it simple.

00:08:18.668 --> 00:08:19.569
Keep it moving.

00:08:19.569 --> 00:08:23.559
I never settle walk the dog peace.
